Survey Questionnaire Session
Led by: Anantha Sivasubramaniam, University of Reading, Malaysia, Chong Kai Hao, Choo Cham Kitt, Markus Loke Qi En & Soh Mei Ling, University of Nottingham Malaysia
Date: 17 Aug 2021
Time: 11:15 - 12:15 MYT
There are many freely available web-based survey tools out there (i.e. SurveyMonkey, Google Forms), but they might not have all the features you need for your research. In this workshop, you will learn how to design customised and sophisticated survey questionnaires to meet your research needs, by creating and deploying effective questions and other survey tools such as rating scales. We will first demonstrate how to create a survey questionnaire in formr (powered by the programming language R), then walk you through a hands-on session in Qualtrics.
Open Science Workshop
Led by: Prof Steve Janssen, University of Nottingham Malaysia
Date: 17 Aug 2021
Time: 13:30 - 15:00 MYT
Not only findings in Psychology –but also findings in other science fields– have been affected by what is called the Replication Crisis, which is the realization that many findings in the scientific literature cannot be reproduced. This crisis has been caused by the publication bias. Because scientific journals have for many years avoided publishing null findings, researchers tended to submit mostly studies that supported the hypotheses. The crisis has been exacerbated by questionable research practises, such as HARK-ing, p-hacking, and using small samples. To minimize publication bias and questionable research practises, researchers have started to make their science more open. They have begun to pre-register their studies and to make their research practises more transparent. Journals, on the other hand, have begun to encourage the sharing of materials, data, and code and to offer Registered Reports. This workshop will introduce researchers from all career stages to the Replication Crisis, pre-registration, and Open Science.
Corpus Linguistics: Analysing Semantic Prosody
Led by: Dr Hajar Abdul Rahim
Date: 18 Aug 2021
Time: 13:30 - 15:00 MYT
Semantic prosody is the meaning of a word or phrase that is formed due to its recurring partnership with other words, known as collocates. Â A word or phrase, depending on its collocates, may have a positive, negative or neutral prosody. Â The semantic prosody that a word or phrase inherits due to its context of use also reflects its cultural connotations. This session discusses the notion of semantic prosody and demonstrates, based on corpus methods, the implications of semantic prosody analysis for language research.
Introduction to Gorilla Sessions 1 & 2
Led by: Angelika Golegos, Grazia Di Pisa & Kaja Gregorc, University of Konstanz
Date: 18 Aug 2021
Time: 17:30 - 19:00 MYT (Session 1)
19:30 - 21:00 MYT (Session 2)
In this two-sessions workshop, you will learn step-by-step how to design and deploy an experiment online using the Experiment Builder Gorilla. Gorilla is a powerful tool that allows you to create online behavioral experiments using an intuitive graphical interface without needing to code. You will be asked to create an account on Gorilla and to watch some videos before the workshop. The first session will be an introduction to the platform. We will cover all the important steps in creating and launching an experiment. We will first navigate through the platform and we will show you all the different steps to start building your experiment. Gorilla can be used to create various experimental tasks, questionnaires, and consent forms. In this first session we will show you how easy and quick it is to set up your experiment using Gorilla. The second session will be a hands-on session and you will learn how to set up an experiment using Gorilla. There will be three working groups, each focusing on creating a different task: grammaticality judgement task, N-back/Flanker task, vocabulary learning task. You will be given the opportunity to choose the working group you would like to join. In the working groups we will create these experiments together step-by-step.
Introduction to PsychoPy
Led by: Soh Mei Ling, Chong Kai Hao, Choo Cham Kitt, & Markus Loke Qi En, University of Nottingham Malaysia
Date: 19 Aug 2021
Time: 11:15 - 12:45 MYT
In this workshop, we are going to give a broad introduction to using PsychoPy. This is useful for anyone who is unfamiliar with PsychoPy and hasn’t used the PsychoPy before (beginner). However, it is also useful for immediate PsychoPy users who are interested to learn useful tips and tricks as well as those who want a refresher lesson. Due to the pandemic, this workshop will be delivered through the Zoom platform and interested participants can register for the workshop through the conference sign-up list.
